This was a free-lance project for the cover of the brochure for the 2012 conference. You can see the progress of the project below.

I took the Great Wave off Kanagawa by Japanese artist Hokusai:

and then added this sketch of the crew’s ship:

I went in and edited a lot, especially taking all the small boats out of the great wave and re-drawing portions of the wave in the style of the rest of the piece. I printed the finished image on adhesive-backed printer paper, cut everything out, covered it in transparent adhesive to protect it from smearing and water damage, and applied it to the back of my red hp mini netbook. Was a fun use of a few hours one evening.

My affinity for The Great Wave off Kanagawa is showing as this is the second project on this blog where I have used it prominently.

Mock ‘Poetry Slam’ Flyer for SUAAB

Here’s the original,’Great Wave off Kanagawa’ (1832) by Katsushika Hokusai:

I planned to put in a couple of swimmers and people in inner-tubes with a girl diving in the foreground. What I ended up doing was putting in the text and realizing how busy it already was and went with the board and diver which was a quick doodle without refference.

Quick flyer with bogus info done in Photoshop for my application to SUAAB. With a dead-line of 5 this evening, I had to spend less time on it than i normally do. Took a little over an hour.

Crits and comments welcome!

I’ve made a couple more changes, thanks to everyone’s crits. Still a work in project so please speak up.

Worked on it a bit more, made some changes. I’ve added half an inch on the left to shift the weight of the piece more towards the center. I’ve made changes to colors, and object placement. I need to start work on the second version of the piece I’ve told some of yal about. I just can’t quite finish this one.

I’ve finaly added the tentacles I’ve meant to put in from the start. Those were fun. I started by nabbing reference from photos of octupus and then painted over them. I ended up painting half of them by hand, without reference. I also added tigers to the background to break up the empty areas of background using photographs from a friend’s trip to the zoo.  My first attempt was a bit overwhelming so I’ve tweeked it. Tell me if its still too much.

It’s a bit more defined. I’ve decided that in the interest of time, not to make the tenticles that were shown in the sketch coming out of the skulls mouth. I’m not yet happy with the empty spaces in the piece and little nit-picky things. Until I am happy with the rest of the piece, I’ll leave out the tentacles.

I’ve made some big changes. I’ve actually gone in a couple of directions since the last update, mostly because I worked into the late hours on this and lost hours of work when Photoshop crashed.

I’m still looking for ideas and welcome critiques on the image. Comments here are on my Facebook would be much appreciated.

Deffinantly getting it fleshed out alot more. The girl and tiger are stock photos I paid for (the skull was just something I pulled off of Google Images search, but is altered in color, shape, rotation and all, that that I should be allright). I was able to use to do the background from an online tutorial.

This is about how far I’ve planned. Comments here or Facebook would be great as to what I can do with the rest of the image. I’ll be adding tattered edges to top and bottem, mabye some bigger tares to take ou some of the empty space. I know I want to give a burned look to some edges.

All I can say is thank God for the Pen Tool.
